Project 365
2025 - Issue #16
For this 365 project, whenever I finish shooting a roll, I choose another to load right away. I usually factor in weather into my choice, but not much else. So when different lighting conditions arise throughout my days, I have to work within the parameters of the film and sometimes stretch my creativity and skills.
This is what happened when the carnival came to town. I saw it right after it had been set up and thought I would visit at night to take some photos.
The camera had been loaded with expired FujiFilm Superia X-TRA 400. I love the color tones of this film but had never shot it at night. I had no idea if it was a good choice for night photography, and in general I haven’t done much shooting at night but I wanted to give it a try.

These beautiful pastel colors are what I’m used to from this film stock. I’m still mad at Fuji for discontinuing it!
A few hours after sundown, I set off to the carnival with camera, tripod and low expectations in hand.
Using the LightMe App on my phone, I metered but experimented with aperture and exposure times. I really had no idea what I was doing!
I was really blown away when I saw these scans. I expected under-exposed, unusable shots. Instead I got shots with vivid color and deep blacks showing a beautiful spectacle of lights. I’m still not exactly sure how this film performed so well.

And now back to day time.
This was the last of my cold stored FujiFilm Superia X-TRA 400. (sob) I have some other rolls that were kept in a box in the laundry room. Who knows how those have fared, but when I shoot them, you’ll be the first to know. Well, the second to know. -I’ll be the first to know.
Thank you for reading! Until next time.

Something so picturesque, so evocative about the lights of a carnival at night.
The colours are really lovely, Alicia! The first one is my favorite!
